CYSE 407 - Digital Forensics

This course introduces the basic concepts and technologies of digital forensics. Students will learn the fundamental techniques and tools utilized for collecting, processing, and preserving digital evidence on computers, mobile devices, networks, and cloud computing environments. Students will also engage in oral and written communication to report digital forensic findings and prepare court presentation materials.

Course Overview

This course served as my Capstone course for graduation.  Much of this course was focused on learning how to start a business and create a business plan.  Each week, students were tasked with writing a different section of the business plan.  At the end of the semester, we had a complete business plan.  I gained real-world experience in understanding how to apply my knowledge in developing a new product and evaluate its potential success.  I also learned how to complete all aspects of a business plan which is a valuable skill to have for future endeavors.

This Digital Forensics Course gave a broad hands-on experience with the fundamental tools and techniques required for digital forensic activities.  With the utilization of an online lab environment, students were tasked with collecting, processing, and preserving digital evidence.  Through the use of different programs such as Autopsy and OSForensics.  In addition to the labs, students were required to develop a Digital Forensics Lab plan that included physical layout, inventory requirements, lab accreditation plan, lab maintenance requirements, and staffing.

The mid-term project represented the course overall because it brought together many aspects of the course into one comprehensive report.  A digital forensics lab must be run to strict standards to maintain accreditation.  This report details each of those requirements following the ANAB accreditation manual.  The report demonstrates the knowledge I acquired during the course.

Developing the report was pretty difficult because the answers weren’t clearly stated in one specific place.  This project required a lot of critical thinking to determine what type of information was relevant and needed to be included.  Additionally, the project required a lab layout to be drawn using the Microsoft Visio program.  As I was not very familiar with the program, I had to research and figure out how to create it.  This was beneficial for me because this program is used often in networking, so this experience allowed me to develop my proficiency in navigating the program.
